WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Susi was rated 326th overall among prospects by Baseball America coming into the 2018 draft. BA called him a big, physical catcher with some defensive skills, although they noted that he added weight and lost some quickness and agility behind the plate. He has an above average arm and gets good marks for his hard work. Despite good size, he’s a contact-oriented hitter and hasn’t shown power yet due to a slow bat. Overall, he hit 286/362/376 as a sophomore and 335/429/402 as a junior. Susi appears to have major league potential as a backup due to the defense and on base skills. He signed quickly.
2018 The Pirates assigned Susi to Morgantown initially. He split time behind the plate with Grant Koch, who was taken in the fifth round and so figured to get more of the playing time. In early August, the Pirates moved Susi down to Bristol and he was the primary catcher there the rest of the season. He didn’t do much at the plate beyond showing good plate discipline. He threw out 28% of base stealers overall. 2019 Susi backed up Grant Koch at Greensboro. He didn’t do much at the plate beyond drawing walks at a solid rate. He threw out 22% of base stealers and had some trouble with passed balls. 2020 Susi will likely continue as a backup. |
