Calderon wasn’t a prominent signing and quickly settled into a utility role in his three DSL seasons.  He’s spent some time at short, but more at second.

DSL:  229/333/299, 144 AB, 4 2B, 3 3B, 22 BB, 46 K, 4-7 SB

Calderon was the primary secondbaseman in the DSL.  He had a lot of trouble with errors, committing 20 in 41 games there.  He mostly struggled at the plate, with a very high K rate.

DSL:  173/278/307, 127 AB, 5 2B, 6 3B, 18 BB, 37 K, 1-3 SB

Calderon went backward at the plate in his second season.  He played primarily at first, which is probably an indication that the Pirates by then saw him as more of a utility player and that was the position that was open.

DSL:  258/381/400, 120 AB, 7 2B, 5 3B, 21 BB, 32 K, 7-14 SB

The Pirates used Calderon in a utility role.  He divided his time among the four infield positions, with one game in the outfield.  He had a lot less trouble with errors than in 2015, except at short.  Calderon hit much better, with pretty good gap power and a good BB:K ratio, although that was due to a high walk rate as his K rate was too high for a hitter with no over-the-fence power.

R:  300/364/400, 10 AB, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K

The Pirates invited Calderon to fall instructional league and brought him to the GCL.  He played very little, getting into three games in June and one at the end of July.

If he’s back in 2019, Calderon could be at Bristol or back in the GCL.
