How Acquired: International Free Agent
Country: Dominican Republic
WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
|The Pirates had to wait two years for Montout, as his original contract was voided because he couldn’t verify his age. They signed him a second time at the beginning of the 2019-20 signing period. He has very good height and throws in the mid-90s, and he still has room to fill out.
Usually, July 2 signees don’t play until the following year, but the Pirates got Montout into action immediately. He pitched as a starter and reliever, doing a bit better in shorter outings. Over all he pitched well, although at 22 he was old for the level.
Montout came to fall instructionals in 2019, so he likely would have been in the US in 2020 had there been a season.
Apart from missing a month with an injury, Montout spent the season in the Bradenton bullpen. His overall numbers weren’t good, but he had an ERA of 9.00 in 14 innings before he went out and 2.92 in 24.2 afterward. Overall, he had a high K rate and held opponents to .204 average; when he had problems it was walks and left-handed batters. They had an .890 OPS against him, while right-handed batters managed just .474.
Montout’s 2021 season showed some promise after he returned from the injury. He’ll be 25 when the 2022 season starts.
