WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Gray played all over the field for Rice, including third base, first base, left field, and pitcher.  Baseball America rated him the 52nd best prospect out of Texas and said his best defensive position is second base, which is where the Pirates announced him.  He has some arm strength, hitting 92 MPH off the mound.  Gray showed some power in 2017, hitting for a 313/399/540 line with eight homers in 176 at-bats.  That followed up a sophomore year in which he had a 295/353/462 line with five homers in 156 at-bats.  He’ll need continue to develop offensively to establish himself as a prospect at second base.

2017
A-:  269/329/486, 208 AB, 12 2B, 6 3B, 7 HR, 19 BB, 32 K, 5-12 SB

Gray had the best debut of the Pirates’ 2017 college hitting draftees.  He finished second in the New York-Penn League in slugging, tied for seventh in HRs and tied for third in triples.  He didn’t draw many walks, but made contact consistently.  He had a reverse platoon split, posting an OPS of .850 against LHPs and .799 against RHPs.  The Pirates employed him at second initially, but in early August they moved him to short and he stayed there the rest of the year.  He didn’t have any obvious problems at either position.

Gray had a very encouraging debut and hopefully will go to Bradenton in 2018.  If he could stay at short it’d be big plus, although Adrian Valerio should also be at Bradenton.
