Tam Sing has been drafted twice but didn’t sign.  He was granted redshirt status for 2012 after missing nearly all the season due to injury, so 2014 was actually his junior year.  He’s a solid defensive player with a strong arm who can back up at second or short.  He didn’t hit especially well in college, striking out at a very high rate.  Although he had a year of eligibility left, he signed with the Pirates in July 2014 and was assigned to Jamestown.

A-:  208/256/278, 72 AB, 5 2B, 5 BB, 15 K, 2-5 SB

A little surprisingly, Tam Sing was more or less the regular at short for Jamestown after he signed, which basically meant the month of August.  After a 1-20 start, he batted .269 the rest of the way.  He some error problems in the field, with seven in just 21 games at short.

A+:  270/308/378, 40 AB, 4 2B, 2 BB, 9 K, 1-1 SB

Tam Sing served as a utility infielder at West Virginia for much of the season’s first four months, although he also was reassigned to extended spring training at times, including all of June.  He backed up at both second and short.  In August he moved up to Bradenton after the Pirates promoted Erich Weiss and played ten games at second.  He showed good gap power at the plate, but struck out a lot.

AAA:  200/200/800, 5 AB, 1 HR, 2 K

Tam Sing served as a roving emergency fill-in, which in the end amounted to 14 games at Bradenton and three for Indianapolis.  His time in the field was mainly at short and second, but he pitched once.

Tam Sing will fill the same role in 2017, initially for Bradenton.
