Patten is a 6’4″ first baseman who starred in high school as a basketball and baseball player.  He was a three-year starter at Delaware, where he hit .285 with 12 homers and 16 doubles as a freshman.  In his second season, he batted .312 with 14 homers while showing improvements in his walk and strikeout rates.  In his junior year, his walk and strikeout rates both went in the wrong direction, and he had an OPS of .839, a drop from .946 and 1.026 in his first two years.  Baseball America rated him as the sixth best draft prospect in Delaware.  He signed quickly and the Pirates sent him to the GCL.

Patten was one of the many college players the Pirates sent to the GCL.  He served as the primary first baseman and struggled to hit despite being old for the level.  He did show a little power, but had trouble making contact.

Patten was the most frequent first baseman for West Virginia, starting about half the time.  He showed a little power but had serious problems making contact.

If he’s still with the organization in 2020, Patten should be backing up somewhere.
