MIGUEL YAJURE, RIGHT HANDED PITCHER
|Born: May 1, 1998
Signed: International Free Agent, 2015 (Yankees)
How Acquired: Trade (with Yankees for Jameson Taillon)
WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
|The Yankees signed Yajure for a modest bonus out of Venezuela. For his first couple years, he was a finesse pitcher who didn’t walk many or miss bats, with a questionable ceiling. He had Tommy John surgery in 2017 and, possibly due to work he did on rehab, eventually started throwing harder. He went from 88-92 to 91-95 mph, occasionally reaching 97, by 2020. He has a good change and a curve, and has added a cutter that’s helped him miss more bats. He’s also added a slider. The Pirates acquired him as part of the return for Jameson Taillon.
Yajure made 14 starts in the DSL. He got good results, with strong control but a low K rate.
Yajure continued to get good results in rookie ball, allowing very few baserunners while still not missing many bats.
Yajure had Tommy John surgery and missed the season.
In June, the Yankees sent Yajure to full season ball and he pitched well, probably better than the ERA shows, missing a few more bats.
Yajure had a strong season in high A and also two late-season starts in AA. He started to show more velocity as the season went along and also missed more bats. After the season, Baseball America ranked him 11th in the Yankees’ system and New York added him to the 40-man roster.
The Yankees sent Yajure to their training facility and called him up a few times during the season. He made three appearances and had control problems, but otherwise pitched well. BA moved him up to seventh in the system.
Yajure hasn’t pitched in AAA and figures to start there in 2021, but there’s a good chance he’ll see time with the Pirates at some point.
