WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES
|Ferreras is a big RHP who’s had some good K rates but has struggled to throw strikes. He’s a moderate groundball pitcher.
Pitching in relief, Ferreras struggled through his first pro season. He had severe control problems and also got hit hard.
Ferreras missed the season with an injury.
Still pitching primarily in relief, Ferreras made significant progress despite continuing control problems. He fanned a batter an inning.
The Pirates moved Ferreras to the rotation, where he continued to make progress despite the higher ERA. He cut his walk rate some more and maintained a decent K rate.
The Pirates tried Ferreras at Bristol to start the 2014 season and he struggled badly there, partly due to an inability to throw strikes. They moved him down to the GCL for a half dozen relief appearances in August and he had no trouble at all.
Ferreras returned to Bristol and continued to struggle, with increased control problems. He spent the last month of the season on the restricted list.
Ferreras remained on the restricted list all season.
Ferreras should be eligible for minor league free agency after the 2016, although I’m not sure whether his being on the restricted list would impact his eligibility.
