Haynes has a fastball that sits at 91-92, along with a slider and change. In college, he was his team’s Friday starter in 2012, but didn’t have as good a season as in 2011. Baseball America rated him the 25th best prospect in Virginia. He signed quickly after the draft.
2012 Haynes served as the Spikes’ closer. He fanned a lot of hitters but allowed a few too many baserunners. 2013 Haynes was West Virginia’s closer for part of the first half of the season and mostly did well in the role, but things got more interesting after he moved to the rotation in mid-July. In eight starts, he posted a 2.01 ERA and .184 opponents’ batting average, and fanned just under a batter per inning. He had a large platoon split overall, dominating right-handed hitters to the tune of 158/245/188, while lefties hit 284/364/403 against him. Despite being a flyball pitcher, he allowed only one HR. Haynes so far has shown the ability to get swings and misses. If they see him as a prospect, the Pirates will probably have him in the rotation at Bradenton in 2014. |
