For some reason, Marte is listed as a righty at some sites, including Baseball America, but he’s a small lefty.  He throws a low-90s fastball, along with a slider and change.  He’s generally been a groundball pitcher and has not had a significant platoon split.  He’s been mostly a starter; of 123 games in full season ball prior to 2016, he started 97.  Baseball America has never ranked him on any prospect list.  The Pirates signed him to a minor league deal for 2016 and invited him to major league spring training.

DSL:  5-1-3, 1.62 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, 61.0 IP, 2.1 BB/9, 13.4 K/9

Marte put up exceptional numbers in his DSL debut.  He pitched solely in relief, logging 61 innings in 28 games.

R:  2-1-0, 2.53 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 35.1 IP, 2.5 BB/9, 7.9 K/9
A-:  0-0-0, 6.14 ERA, 1.64 WHIP, 7.1 IP, 4.9 BB/9, 12.3 K/9

Marte pitched well again in rookie ball, this time as a starter, although he didn’t strike out nearly as many batters.  The Giants moved him up for eight relief appearances in the Northwest League.

A:  1-1-0, 3.00 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 21.0 IP, 3.4 BB/9, 4.7 K/9

Marte opened the season in the rotation in low A, but after five starts he went out with an elbow injury and had Tommy John surgery.

R:  0-0-0, 3.52 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 7.2 IP, 2.3 BB/9, 10.6 K/9
A:  1-0-0 2.73 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 26.1 IP, 2.4 BB/9, 5.5 K/9
A+:  0-0-0, 14.73 ERA, 3.00 WHIP, 3.2 IP, 12.3 BB/9, 7.4 K/9

Following the elbow surgery, Marte began rehab in rookie ball at the beginning of July.  He made four starts and three relief appearances in low A, then one start in high A.

A+:  12-6-0, 3.47 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 147.2 IP, 2.9 BB/9, 5.1 K/9

Marte spent the season in the rotation in high A.  His ERA was a little better than his peripheral numbers and he had a very low K rate, but overall his performance was very good considering that he was in the high-offense California League.  Marte was slightly better against right-handed than left-handed hitters.  His innings total was surprisingly high for a pitcher who’d missed most of the previous two seasons.

R:  8-7-0, 4.06 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 144.0 IP, 4.3 BB/9, 8.1 K/9
A+:  2-1-0, 3.47 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 36.1 IP, 2.0 BB/9, 6.7 K/9

Marte was hurt at the start of the season and began rehab in June.  He pitched well after returning to the California League.

A+:  6-4-0, 3.67 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 105.1 IP, 1.6 BB/9, 6.8 K/9

The Giants sent Marte back to the California League again.  He pitched well in 15 starts and 10 relief outings, again with a low K rate.  He held left-handed hitters to a .659 OPS, while right-handed hitters posted a .735 figure.

AA:  8-3-0, 3.83 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 87.0 IP, 2.4 BB/9, 5.7 K/9
AAA:  1-2-0, 5.94 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 36.1 IP, 2.0 BB/9, 5.2 K/9

Marte spent most of the season in AA, before moving up to AAA for six starts.  He had a slight reverse platoon split.

AA:  10-6-0, 2.63 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 130.0 IP, 2.8 BB/9, 5.3 K/9

The Giants sent Marte back to AA, where he started 19 of his 26 games.  He continued to pitch well, among other things with only five HRs allowed, with a very low K rate.  He had no meaningful platoon split.

AAA:  4-3-2, 3.67 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 73.2 IP, 2.6 BB/9, 7.0 K/9
MLB:  0-0-0, 13.50 ERA, 2.10 WHIP, 3.1 IP, 5.4 BB/9, 2.7 K/9

Marte struggled out of the Indianapolis bullpen in April and May, with a 6.04 ERA.  After that, though, he posted a 2.2o ERA and 0.92 WHIP for the Indians.  He made one spot start in May that didn’t go well, but his last three outings in AAA were starts and he allowed just three runs in 16 innings.  At the end of the month, the Pirates needed a reliever and called up Marte over Kyle Lobstein, whose place Marte took on the 40-man roster.  After two not-very-good outings, the Pirates designated Marte for assignment to clear roster space.  He cleared waivers and was outrighted to AAA.

Marte will become a free agent after the season.
