WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Hernandez broke out in a big way in college in 2009. It’s not often a guy puts up a slugging average that’s higher than any other two years of his career combined. He spent 2005-06 at Long Beach State, but he was ruled academically ineligible and transferred to Texas, playing two years there after sitting out a year. It’s worth remembering, when looking at Hernandez’ gaudy power stats for 2009, that he didn’t show that power until he was two years older than most of the competition he was facing. He’s limited to the corners in the outfield and is probably below average defensively.
2009: Pirates were probably hoping he’d provide some offense for State College, but early-season ankle injury limited him to eight games. 2010: Went to West Virginia and didn’t play much at first. Went 2-for-22 in April, then hit just 242/315/333 in May, with no HRs in either month. Got hot in June, though, with monthly OPS totals of 1.039, .838, and .876 through August. Not a big guy, but takes a very big cut which produces good power when he makes contact. Also willing to take a walk. Had significant reverse platoon split, but with only 94 ABs against LHPs that may not mean much. Divided time between left, right and DH. Played the entire season at 24, which is old for low A. If you bear that in mind, his hitting there wasn’t impressive. Most likely Hernandez will be an organizational bat. He was slated to start 2011 at Altoona. That was a little surprising, but he was 25 so it made sense for the Pirates to challenge him. It remains to be seen how much he’ll play. |
