The Pirates signed Parsons near the beginning of the GCL season in 2011 after he went undrafted out of Virginia Tech. He started his collegiate career at the University of Hawaii, but pitched only a third of an inning as a freshman. He transferred to Cuesta College, a community college in California, and was Western State Conference Pitcher of the Year, then went to Virginia Tech. He pitched sparingly as a junior and began his senior season as a mid-week starter, but ended up as the team’s ace. He’s not a big guy but his fastball gets into the low 90s, although it sits lower than that.
2011 Pitched out of the bullpen in the GCL, where the younger hitters batted .294 against him. Parsons figures to be an organizational pitcher and typically would move up to State College or West Virginia, but he wasn’t very effective in the GCL. |
