WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

The Pirates drafted Mulderig as a pitcher, but he’d seen very limited time on the mound at that point.  He’d spent most of his time as an outfielder, batting .305 in 112 games and getting on base at a decent clip, with 24 stolen bases in 28 attempts.  Mulderig didn’t pitch at all as a freshman, then struggled in very limited mound action as a sophomore.  He showed improvement on the mound as a swingman in his junior year.  Scouts believed the 6’4″ righty could eventually develop a plus fastball once he concentrated on pitching.  In spring 2014, he was sitting at 90-91, but has thrown harder at times.

2013
R:  0-1-2, 2.25 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 12.0 IP, 2.2 BB/9, 6.0 K/9
A-:  0-0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 1.2 IP, 5.4 BB/9, 5.4 K/9

Mulderig pitched in relief in the GCL, except for one late-season appearance with Jamestown.  He put up good numbers except for a low K rate, in a very small sample size.

2014
A-:  1-4-1, 5.45 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 38.0 IP, 5.0 BB/9, 6.6 K/9
A:  2-2-0, 4.29 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 21.0 IP, 6.9 BB/9, 8.1 K/9

The Pirates sent Mulderig to West Virginia to open the season.  He struggled with his control there and they sent him to extended spring training in early May.  Once Jamestown started play, he pitched out of the Jammers’ bullpen the rest of the year.  He wasn’t very effective, partly due to continuing control issues.

2015
A-:  2-1-1, 3.65 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 24.2 IP, 3.6 BB/9, 4.7 K/9

Mulderig pitched out of the Morgantown bullpen, improving over the previous season but still having control problems at times.  He strikeout rate dropped sharply and opponents had a .364 OBP against him.  Left-handed hitters posted a .751 OPS against him and right-handed hitters .651.

Mulderig figured to be a project and, after three years as a pro was still in short season ball.  He should move up to West Virginia in 2016.
