WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Rivas was a prominent signing for the Pirates out of Venezuela. He’s tall and thin, with a big frame that should allow him to get stronger. When the Pirates signed him, he was thought to have considerable upside as a hitter. Given his size, an eventual move to third seems possible, but he moves well enough that he might stay at short. His arm is good enough for either spot.
2020 2021 Rivas obviously had a very rough time at the plate in his debut. He struggled severely throughout the season and obviously had a lot of trouble making contact. He played short, except for four games at third. Despite his difficult start, the Pirates brought Rivas to minor league spring training in March 2022, so he’ll probably be in the Gulf Coast League. |
