WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
|Goldfarb played for four years at Oregon. He didn’t hit a great deal in his first two years, but in his last two he had OPS figures of .884 and .850. He primarily played the outfield at Oregon, but also occasionally caught. The White Sox drafted Goldfarb as a catcher and that’s what he did most of the time in his brief stretch with them. He moved on to independent ball after Chicago cut him loose. He caught a little but mostly played center field. The Pirates signed Goldfarb to a minor league deal for 2022.
Goldfarb got only brief opportunities in rookie and advanced rookie ball. He played behind the plate most of the time.
The White Sox released Goldfarb in May. He caught on with Chicago of the independent City of Champions, but saw just a little action.
Goldfarb spent the season with Ogden of the Pioneer League, playing mostly in center. He did catch seven games. Goldfarb tore the place up, finishing among the leaders in OPS and home runs. He also led the league in runs, with 116 in just 88 games, and in steals by a wide margin. His numbers weren’t as impressive as they appear, as it was an extreme hitters league, but he was one of the best hitters just the same.
The Pirates could use Goldfarb in the outfield or behind the plate, although they’re no longer short on catchers in the system. Even though he hasn’t played in full season ball yet, he’ll turn 26 about the middle of 2022, so the Pirates may want to move him up aggressively. He’ll start, though, at Bradenton and it looks like he’ll catch some there.
