WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

The Pirates drafted Wright as a redshirt sophomore, so he had two more years of eligibility.  They took his teammate, Cory Wood, in the 19th round of the same draft.  Wright hit 355/516/601 in 183 at-bats, with 11 homers, in 2019.  He showed good plate discipline, walking 45 times and striking out 37.  He previously was a pitcher in high school, but had arthroscopic shoulder surgery during his senior year, costing him most of that season.  That also caused him to miss his freshman year, which was at South Carolina, as a redshirt.  He transferred to Seminole State College in 2018, then moved to Coastal Carolina the next year.  Due to the time missed with injuries and moving around so much, there’s a chance that scouts didn’t get a good opportunity to scout him over the years.  Wright signed with the Pirates a month after the draft for the slot amount.

2019
R+:  241/373/310, 87 AB, 6 2B, 12 BB, 25 K, 4-5 SB

With Bristol, Wright split his time evenly between the outfield corners, with one start in center.  His playing time was limited by the late signing and the overloaded outfield.  He didn’t hit much when he played; he did have a good OBP thanks to a high walk rate and eight hit batsmen.  (He got hit 16 times during the college season.)

Wright probably needs more playing time, but he’ll face a crowded outfield situation wherever he ends up in 2021.
