Godfrey signed for an above-slot bonus as a 34th-round draftee of the Jays.  His strength has always been good control.  His fastball when he was drafted was reportedly 90-94, but he throws mainly in the upper-80s now.  He has a fringy slider and change.  He hasn’t been hit as hard in the minors as you’d think, judging by his stuff, even in the Pacific Coast League.  He had passable K rates through 2011, but not since then.  He’s not a groundball pitcher.

A:  6-7-0, 3.98 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 110.2 IP, 2.9 BB/9, 6.0 K/9

Godfrey signed too late to play in 2006 and debuted in full season ball the next year.  He got hit pretty hard, with an opponents’ average of .302.  He somehow came into 2006 rated by Baseball America as the Blue Jays’ 18th best prospect.  After the season, and after the trade to Oakland, he ranked as the A’s’ 28th best prospect.

A+:  5-8-0, 5.10 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 134.0 IP, 2.5 BB/9, 8.0 K/9
AAA:  0-0-0, 4.05 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 6.2 IP, 2.7 BB/9, 5.4 K/9

Godfrey got hit hard again in high A, although it was the California League.

AA:  11-8-0, 3.50 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 159.1 IP, 2.9 BB/9, 6.2 K/9

The A’s moved Godfrey up to AA and he pitched much better than the previous year.  His K rate remained low.

AA:  0-1-0, 3.86 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, 18.2 IP, 4.3 BB/9, 7.7 K/9
AAA:  4-7-0, 5.59 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 106.1 IP, 4.5 BB/9, 7.4 K/9

Godfrey spent most of the year in AAA and struggled, even with his control.  He did improve his K rate.

AA:  0-0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 4.0 IP, 2.2 BB/9, 13.5 K/9
AAA:  14-3-0, 2.68 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 107.1 IP, 2.5 BB/9, 7.5 K/9
MLB: 1-2-0, 3.96 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 25.0 IP, 1.8 BB/9, 4.7 K/9

Godfrey had an outstanding year in AAA, giving up fewer hits, striking out a decent number of hitters and improving his control.  The A’s called him up briefly several times.

AAA:  9-2-0, 3.29 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 104.0 IP, 2.2 BB/9, 5.2 K/9
MLB: 0-1-0, 2.53 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 21.1 IP, 2.5 BB/9, 3.0 K/9

Godfrey again had a good season in AAA, although his K rate dropped.  He started three times in April, then came back for two appearances in late May.  Oakland eventually designated him for assignment in August.  The A’s traded him to Boston in the off-season.

AAA (Bos):  4-3-0, 3.83 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, 42.1 IP, 4.0 BB/9, 6.4 K/9
AAA (Pgh):  7-5-0, 3.99 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 76.2 IP, 1.6 BB/9, 5.3 K/9

Godrey pitched mostly in relief in 2013 for Boston’s AAA affiliate.  His walk rate drifted back upward.  The Pirates brought in Godfrey and lefty reliever Atahualpa Severino as Indianapolis was losing pitchers rapidly to promotions and injury.  They used Godfrey as a swing man, giving him 11 starts out of 19 games.  He walked very few and didn’t allow many base runners, but was hurt by longballs, as he allowed 11.  He was much better as a starter, with a 3.56 ERA as opposed to 5.63 relieving.  He had trouble with left-handed hitters, who posted an .841 OPS against him, compared to .644 by right-handed hitters.

Godfrey will be a free agent in the off-season.
