WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Alvarado is a sidearm pitcher who throws a low-90s fastball and a slider. He hasn’t developed a swing-and-miss pitch.
2008: Was a mainstay in GCL team’s rotation. K rate remained extremely low, but Pirates cited Alvarado as one of most promising players on GCL roster. 2009: Surprisingly, made West Virginia roster out of spring training and spent year in rotation, except for some relief appearances late in year when team appeared to be reducing his workload. Got hit pretty hard throughout year, but K rate improved and he didn’t walk many. Pirates obviously think Alvarado has some potential, as they stuck with him despite mediocre performance, even after all season. 2010: Returned to West Virginia, but didn’t improve a great deal. Pitching mainly in relief, allowed fewer hits but also fanned fewer hitters. Had significant problems with LH hitters after doing OK against them in 2009. Pirates moved him up to Bradenton for the playoffs. Alvarado was not on a full season roster at the start of 2011. He could appear at some point if he’s still with the organization. |
