The Pirates signed Macias out of Mexico, where he was playing in the highest level summer league — probably the equivalent of a mid-level US minor league — at age 19.  Playing against older players, some with major league experience, Macias hit 318/351/382 in 73 games, with 18 steals in 25 tries.  He has good speed, probably enough to play center, and an above average arm.  He signed at the start of spring training in 2018 and was in camp early.  I don’t know what bonus he received, but there were several other teams scouting him when the Pirates signed him.

A-:  325/373/429, 77 AB, 4 2B, 2 3B, 6 BB, 12 K, 2-5 SB
A:  222/315/325, 126 AB, 6 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 14 BB, 42 K, 5-6 SB

Given his experience level, Macias was slated to start with West Virginia, but there was a delay imposed by the MLB process for approving his contract.  It finally got cleared up in June and the Pirates sent Macias to Morgantown.  After two games there, he moved up to West Virginia, where he struggled, including a very high K rate.  In mid-August, the Pirates sent Macias back down to Morgantown and he hit well there.  Macias divided his time among the three outfield positions, playing mostly left with the Power and center for Morgantown.

A:  280/330/396, 472 AB, 25 2B, 3 3B, 8 HR, 28 BB, 90 K, 18-29 SB

The Pirates sent Macias to Greensboro and he got off to a dreadful start, batting just .132 in April.  He followed that with a red hot May, when he had a 347/394/547 line.  After that he settled in at just an adequate level, hitting just one home run after May and posting an OPS of just .682 in July and .687 in August.  He had no platoon split.  Macias was the team’s most frequent center fielder, but he also saw significant time in each corner.

Macias handled low A a lot better in 2019 than in 2018, but he didn’t really take a step forward.  He should be at Bradenton in 2021, when he’ll be 23 after the missed season.
