WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
|Ortiz signed at age 19, shortly before spring training in 2018. He had interest from other teams, which isn’t surprising given that he’s a tall lefty and has good velocity, sitting at 92-93 around the time he signed. He’s since reached the mid-90s, and he also throws a curve and change. It’s unknown what bonus he received from the Pirates, but it was probably somewhere in the $200-300,000 range.
Ortiz pitched in the rotation, putting up weak numbers apart from a solid K rate. Opponents batted .280 against him. He pitched well in July, but not at the beginning or end of the season.
Ortiz pitched mostly as a starter in the GCL. He did reasonably well except for the obvious problem of walks. He seemed to make progress in August, walking eight and striking out 17 in 16.1 IP. In June and July he walked 13 and struck out ten in 11 IP.
Early in the season, Ortiz made two relief appearances for Bradenton that obviously didn’t go well at all due to control issues. The Pirates sent him back to extended spring training and he made two appearances in the FCL in early July. He threw three scoreless innings in the first and didn’t retire anybody in the second. And than he went out for the year with an unknown injury.
Ortiz has very good stuff, but the control problems haven’t gone anywhere so far. He’s already eligible for the Rule 5 draft.
