WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Child was the second Australian amateur player signed by the Pirates. He converted from shortstop to catcher shortly before they signed him. He headed initially to the baseball academy operated in Australia by MLB, where he hit quite well.
2010 Made the GCL roster, but played sparingly. Childs saw more time at first than behind the plate, probably due to the presence of catchers Joey Schoenfeld and Elias Diaz, and the absence of injured firstbaseman Michaelangel Trinidad. He didn’t hit much, but considering his experience level he probably did alright; his BB and K rates weren’t bad. He threw out only one of thirteen base stealers. 2011 Back in the GCL, Child made a little progress with the bat, but had no extra base hits and only two walks. This time he mainly caught. He threw out four of 24 base stealers. 2012 Child served as a utility player in the GCL. He caught ten games, mainly when Wyatt Mathisen was out with a foot injury, and played a few games at first and second. Child is obviously an organizational player at this point. There’s always a need for catching depth, so he may return in 2013. |
