SCOUTING REPORT
|
Hankins has been a starter his entire minor league career with the Pirates, although he hasn’t really put up encouraging numbers, and doesn’t find himself amongst the Pirates’ starting pitching options, even as a sleeper. Despite good walk ratios and decent strikeout ratios, Hankins has struggled with his ERA, mostly due to allowing too many hits. Now that the Pirates have bolstered their starting depth, Hankins will be moved to a relief role.
He saw the move in 2009, and succeeded in the move. Hankins posted a 2.37 FIP in 2009 as a reliever at the AA level. He improved his K/9 ratio from 7.6 as a starter to 8.9 as a reliever, and saw his BB/9 ratio drop from 3.5 to 2.6. He also didn’t allow a home run in 27.1 innings, after allowing a 1.17 HR/9 ratio as a starter. Hankins wouldn’t be the first failed started to have success as a reliever. He’s not on the radar as a starting option, but could be a sleeper bullpen option in the future. |
