WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Collins originally signed with the University of Alabama and redshirted as a Freshman. In 2011, he transferred to Northwest Florida State College, where he hit .419 with some power and won the Conference Player of the Year. He then transferred to Troy, where he has played the last two seasons. Collins puts up some big offensive numbers, both for average and power. He has a quick bat, with good hand-eye coordination. He has played third base and right field as well, but was announced as a first baseman. Last summer, he played in the New England Collegiate Summer League and set league records for home runs, slugging percentage, total bases and extra base hits. He signed after the draft.
2013 Collins got off to a good start at Jamestown, posting an .892 OPS in 14 June games. His monthly OPS after that, though, was .741 and .684. He had an .841 OPS against LHPs and .726 against RHPs. Collins shared the 1B and DH duties with Edwin Espinal, but Espinal got close to two-thirds of the time at first. 2014 Collins lost out on the West Virginia first base job to Espinal. He ended up splitting his time among first, right field and DH. He also missed the last six weeks of the season with an injury. Collins didn’t hit well, with the power being especially disappointing. Collins didn’t hit the way a 23-year-old corner player drafted out of college needs to hit in low A, so he’s likely off the prospect track. He’ll probably serve in a corner utility role at one of the class A affiliates in 2015. |
