WTM’S PLAYER PROFILE |
Zamora was a draft-eligible sophomore who redshirted due to a torn labrum that cost him the entire 2014 season. In 2015, he made 13 starts and two relief appearances, pitching a total of 81 innings. He had a 3.00 ERA and a 35:80 BB/SO ratio, to go along with a .251 BAA. As a freshman before his injury, he made 15 starts and had a 4.95 ERA in 83.2 innings, with 77 strikeouts. His fastball hits 89-90. He also has a sharp curve and a change-up. Zamora was teammates for two years with Kevin Krause, who was drafted in the ninth round by the Pirates in 2014. Zamora was drafted out of high school by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 27th round in 2012. He signed at the end of June.
2015 Zamora had a good debut pitching in relief for Morgantown. He had outstanding walk and K rates. He had slightly more hits allowed than innings pitched (21 hits in 20.1 IP), but that was due to a very high BABIP of .364. He had a reverse platoon split, but the sample size was very small. 2016 Zamora moved up to West Virginia and pitched well there, maintaining his high K rate. He held opponents to a 219/290/336 line and again had a reverse platoon split. His season ended on July 2, though, when he left a game after throwing two pitches and didn’t play again. The Pirates haven’t disclosed the nature of the injury. 2017 Zamora was healthy in camp and spent most of the season at Bradenton. He pitched well, with very good walk and K rates. He had one bad stretch of four outings starting at the end of July that inflated his numbers a bit. He didn’t have much of a platoon split. The Pirates moved Zamora up to Altoona at the end of the season and he got into two games with the Curve. Zamora has moved up quickly considering that he lost half a season in 2016. He’ll probably return to Altoona to open 2018. |
