WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
The Pirates acquired Peacock’s contract in a cash deal with the independent Wichita Wingnuts. They had signed Matt Nevarez from the same team the previous August. Peacock wasn’t one of the better pitchers during the two full years he pitched while he was in college at Mobile. He was never drafted. According to Baseball America, his fastball sits at 92-95 and reaches 97. He also throws a splitter and a slider or cutter, both of which could use improvement.
2012 Pitching for three different teams, mostly as a starter, Peacock put up some bad numbers. His peripheral stats were actually a lot worse than his ERA, as he gave 95 hits, including a dozen longballs, in just 63 innings. 2013 Peacock divided his time between starting and relieving, and had a season very similar to the year before, except his ERA was more in line with his other stats. 2014 Pitching strictly in relief, Peacock had a much better season, allowing just 31 hits and one HR. He did have some control issues, but also fanned far more hitters. He pitched most of the season for Rio Grande Valley, posting a 2.27 ERA, then struggled in six games with Wichita. The Pirates must have thought Peacock made strides pitching strictly in relief. He’s the third in a series of hard-throwing right-handed relievers with control issues whom the Pirates signed in quick succession out of indy ball, the other two being John Holdzkom and Matt Nevarez. Peacock will probably be somewhere in class A in 2015. |
