SCOUTING REPORT
|
After four years at Michigan State, Cullen went undrafted and ended up in the independent leagues. Cullen’s old coach at Michigan State, Mike Steele, became the Lynchburg Hillcats’ pitching coach in the second half of the 2008 season, and mentioned Cullen to the Pirates’ scouts. The Pirates signed Cullen before the 2009 season, and assigned him to Lynchburg. In his first season, Cullen showed good control and good ratios, although his strikeout total was low. His ratios were much better than his 5.01 ERA indicated. It’s unknown whether Cullen will move up to AA or repeat in high-A. He is a long shot, but his 2010 assignment will indicate how the Pirates feel about his chances of making the majors one day in the future. |
