The Pirates first acquired Myrow in mid-2009 from the White Sox in exchange for future considerations. They made the move to add a AAA bat shortly after they promoted Steve Pearce to the majors and designated Craig Monroe for assignment. He re-signed for 2010. He’s made a AAA career as a corner player with good power and exceptional plate discipline. In fact, his career minor league OBP is .417, but it hasn’t gotten him more than a few very brief chances in the majors. He’s very limited defensively.

2001-08: Carved out good career as AAA slugger after Yankees signed him out of independent ball. Really started to make progress when he started hitting for good power in 2003. Originally played third, but played mainly first after 2004.

2009: After coming to Indianapolis, split time between first, left and right. Did great job at the plate. Overall numbers came in spite of .690 OPS against LHPs; his OPS against RHPs was 1.063. That was consistent with career splits, although gap wasn’t generally quite so large.

2010: With Pirates sorting through options like Jose Tabata, Lastings Milledge, Garrett Jones, Pearce, Jeff Clement and Brandon Moss, they seemed a poor option for Myrow, but he re-signed with them. He got a non-roster invite and should have been able to set himself up as possible callup in event of injury or other need, but didn’t hit well in spring training. When Pearce and Moss went to Indianapolis to open season, team was overloaded with OF/1B type options, but found ways to keep Myrow in lineup. Mostly saw time at first and DH, but also played left and right, and even seven games at third. Unfortunately, any chance he’d be the next Garrett Jones evaporated when spring struggles carried over into season. Other than continuing to draw loads of walks, he did little at the plate. Also went on the DL for over a month in mid-July.

Myrow has been an outstanding AAA hitter, but after his collapse in 2010 the Pirates probably will not try to re-sign him.
