WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
|The Pirates announced Citta as a right fielder, but he caught in college as well. He started his college career at San Jose State before transferring to Kansas. In 2018, Citta he had an .870 OPS in 55 games, with 17 doubles, one triple and four homers. Those numbers were much better than his freshman year stats in 2016, when he had a .609 OPS. He didn’t play in 2017 due to the transfer, but he did play summer ball that year and put up solid offensive numbers. Citta has a strong arm and raw power, while his outfield defense and base running are considered below average.
Citta was the primary left fielder for Bristol. He also played a few games in right. He put up decent numbers, but for a 22-year old corner outfielder in a high-offense, advanced rookie league, the numbers weren’t that good. His OPS was almost exactly league average. He had no platoon split at all.
The Pirates sent Citta back to Bristol to start the season and he hit with a little more power. They promoted him to West Virginia in July. He had a very good month of August, batting 313/405/438. His overall numbers in the New York-Penn League were good in the context of a league where the average was 232/313/337. It has to taken into account, though, that he was drafted out of college last year. After the promotion, Citta split his time between right field and first base. The latter could provide him with more opportunities going forward.
Citta at least has made some progress, something that can be said of very few of the Pirates college draftees the last several years. He should be in full season ball if play resumes in 2021.
