WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Baseball America rated Thomas the 89th best prospect in the draft and thought he would go in the first two rounds. He seems to involve more projection than the typical college hitter. He has good speed, but played left in college because Georgia Tech had an even faster player in center. Scouts think he could produce more power with corrections to his swing. The Pirates’ selection of Thomas, Wyatt Mathisen and Barrett Barnes appeared to indicate an effort to add hitting and a departure from the team’s fascination with prep RHPs. |

June 11, 2009: Drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 37th round, 1111th overall pick. June 5, 2012: Drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 4th round, 136th overall pick. |
It looks like the Pirates aren’t willing to cut Barmes loose yet, but I don’t see him sticking around past June if he still isn’t hitting. It looks like Harrison is getting the first shot at replacing him, and Mercer is right behind him.
We definitely need the Walker of 2010. At least last year he was clutch. Not this year.
I still have hope for PA for .270 and 30+. If he ever figgers it out…..
