Once a top prospect in the Boston Red Sox system, Brandon Moss is now a fourth outfielder at best in the majors.  Moss has shown potential to hit for average in the majors, with a .291 average in 103 at-bats with Boston.  He’s also shown potential to hit for some power, with 13 homers in 543 at-bats with the Pirates.  If he could combine the two and become a .280 hitter with 15 home run power, he’d be a strong fourth outfielder.  The biggest asset from Moss is his defense.  Moss posted a 12.2 UZR/150 in 665 innings in right field for the Pirates in 2009, and has an 18.0 UZR/150 in his career in left field.  Moss’ hitting wasn’t much in 2009, but his defense was enough to make him a 0.1 WAR player, which is pretty much the definition of a replacement level player.  If he can boost his hitting to his minor league levels, he can boost his value on the bench.
