WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Maggi is the younger brother of Pirates’ minor league utility player Drew Maggi. Beau went to Arizona State and played only sparingly, redshirting his first year, appearing in just three game as a substitute his second, and getting into 22 games his third. He signed for $100,000 as a late-round Royals’ draft pick, but seems to have been slotted into an organizational role right from the start. He hardly played at all in his third year in the system and the Royals released him. His main offensive contribution was to draw walks. He did throw out 30% of base stealers. The Pirates signed Maggi to a minor league contract for 2015.
2012 Maggi debuted in the Appalachian League. He did little at the plate beyond drawing walks, striking out nearly a third of the time when he didn’t walk. He threw out 38% of base stealers. 2013 The Royals gave Maggi limited playing time with their Pioneer League affiliate, which is the same level as the Appalachian League. He didn’t hit much and drew a lot of walks again, but cut down on his strikeouts. 2014 Maggi filled in briefly at two levels before the Royals released him at the beginning of July. Maggi will probably serve as an organizational catcher, spending time in extended spring training and filling in as needed, most likely in class A. |
