BEAR BELLOMY, RIGHT HANDED PITCHER
|Born: November 29, 1996
Drafted: 28th Round, 884th Overall, 2019
How Acquired: Draft
College: Wright State University
WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
|Bellomy didn’t join the rotation at Wright State until his senior year, but performed well when he did, going 9-3, 3.57 in 15 starts. For reference, the team’s ERA was 4.31 and their opponents had a 7.92 mark. Bellomy didn’t miss a lot of bats, striking out 74 in 95.2 IP, but he walked only 21. His fastball sits in the low-90s, and he also throws a curve and change. He pitched sparingly his first two years, then mostly in relief as a junior, with a 7.34 ERA. As a senior, Bellomy signed a week after the draft.
The Pirates initially sent Bellomy to Bristol, where he pitched in relief. He dominated there and they moved him up to West Virginia, where he pitched in relief at first and then made five starts. His strikeout rate dropped sharply as a starter, and opponents batted .280 against him as a starter and .233 in relief. He was not a groundball pitcher in either role.
Bellomy pitched in relief for Greensboro; unlike the previous front office, the Pirates’ current one seems to try putting players in roles that work for them, rather than fitting them into some pre-existing mold. Despite the ERA, Bellomy pitched very well. Opponents batted only 172/207/302 against him on the road. At the home run ballpark in Greensboro, they hit 276/339/531. He gave up nine home runs at home and four on the road. He had a reverse platoon split. Bellomy made one appearance for Indianapolis at the end of the season.
Taking into account the home/road splits, Bellomy seems like a very interesting pitcher. He’ll have a much more amenable environment at Altoona.
