WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
|The Pirates signed De Dios at age 17. He throws in the low-90s with a good slider and good command.
De Dios pitched mostly as a starter in his debut. He didn’t have a great deal of success, with control being a particular problem, but he did show some improvement after a rough first month.
The Pirates kept De Dios in the rotation in the GCL. He got hit a little hard — opponents batted .294 against him — but he made progress with his command. He improved slowly but steadily during the season.
The Pirates sent De Dios back to the FCL. This time he pitched in relief, apart from one start. Despite the higher ERA, he had a much better season, with opponents batting .212 against him, compared to .294 the previous year. He also improved his K rate. De Dios again improved steadily during the season, with his monthly opponents’ OPS going from .703 to .558 to .328.
De Dios should be in class A in 2022. He’s already eligible for the Rule 5 draft.
