WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
|Suero signed with the Pirates a little before he turned 17. He got a bonus of $100,000.
Suero suffered a minor arm injury during spring training, then after returning had control problems that were bad enough that the Pirates held him out for the rest of the season.
Suero made 11 starts in the DSL. He still had control problems, but they weren’t drastic, and he struck out a lot of hitters. He pitched well in the season’s first half, with a 3.10 ERA through his first five starts. After two bad starts, the Pirates cut back sharply on the length of his outings. He had another bad outing in his last game.
Suero pitched in relief in the GCL, sometimes as a closer. Opponents batted only .222 against him and he obviously missed a lot of bats, but the control problems continued.
Suero didn’t pitch until late July. He made three brief and ineffective appearances, then went out with an unknown injury and didn’t pitch after early August.
Suero has shown good stuff, but he hasn’t had all that much opportunity yet to overcome his control issues. He’s been eligible for the Rule 5 draft since 2020 and has only two more years before minor league free agency.
