After pitching sparingly as a freshman for Western Oregon U, Roth moved into the starting rotation as a sophomore. He put up a 3.77 ERA in 57.1 innings, with a .253 BAA and a 58:26 SO/BB ratio. He improved on those numbers this year as a junior, posting a 2.35 ERA in 61.1 innings, with an 87:25 SO/BB ratio and a .200 BAA. Roth is an athletic player, who also played basketball in high school. He set a school and conference record with 15 strikeouts in a game in late March. Roth threw 89-92 with a slider when drafted, but he was getting over 93 during the off-season.
2019 Roth pitched in short relief for Bristol, sometimes as closer. He missed a lot of bats and had a reverse platoon split. Right-handed batters had a .707 OPS against him and left-handed batters just .480. 2020 2021 The Pirates sent Roth to Bradenton in mid-June and he pitched in relief there the rest of the season, except for one start. He struggled with walks and gopher balls, giving up one of the latter every four innings. His ERA could have been worse, but he was helped by a low BABIP (.263) and a high strand rate (88.6%). His FIP was 7.01. Roth figures to fill in somewhere in class A in 2022. |
