Godwin when drafted had only one plus tool, that being his speed.  He got drafted after improving his hitting in his junior year, then made just gradual progress in the Dodgers’ system, topping out in AA.  He was very consistent during that time, hitting for just decent averages with little power and somewhat low walk rates.  After the Dodgers released him, he spent five years in independent ball, hitting for high averages the first three but declining rapidly the last two.  The Pirates signed him to a minor league contract for 2015.

R+:  310/358/396, 197 AB, 12 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 12 BB, 32 K, 12-19 SB

Godwin played mostly center in advanced rookie ball and had a good debut, apart from a low walk rate.

A:  269/332/347, 383 AB, 12 2B, 6 3B, 2 HR, 28 BB, 53 K, 30-45 SB

Splitting his time between center and left in low A, Godwin put up just mediocre numbers, including just a passable OBP.  He stole a lot of bases but also got caught a lot.

A+:  269/331/324, 324 AB, 7 2B, 4 3B, 1 HR, 27 BB, 58 K, 24-32 SB

The Dodgers moved Godwin up to high A and spent about half his time in center while splitting the rest between right and left.  Despite being in the California League, his hitting declined a little, mainly because he hit for no power at all.

AA:  264/347/333, 417 AB, 17 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 51 BB, 67 K, 31-36 SB

Godwin’s hitting improved a little in AA, mainly in the form of a much higher walk rate.  He also did a much better job of stealing bases.

AA:  254/310/331, 248 AB, 12 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 17 BB, 50 K, 12-20 SB

The Dodgers sent Godwin back to AA and he played only semi-regularly.  He hit about the same as always, except that his walk rate dropped.

IND:  336/399/483, 211 AB, 9 2B, 5 3B, 4 HR, 19 BB, 29 K, 17-22 SB

The Dodgers didn’t assign Godwin anywhere at the start of the season and released him in June.  He caught on in the independent Canadian-American Association and hit very well there.

IND:  317/377/387, 341 AB, 14 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 27 BB, 46 K, 38-44 SB

Godwin played with two different teams in the Atlantic League and had a good season.

IND:  327/369/412, 532 AB, 27 2B, 6 3B, 2 HR, 30 BB, 70 K, 39-55 SB

Godwin had another, similar year in the Atlantic League.

IND:  282/325/338, 556 AB, 18 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 28 BB, 68 K, 50-68 SB

Godwin’s hitting dropped off, although he set a career high in stolen bases.

IND:  247/301/277, 332 AB, 5 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 19 BB, 38 K, 13-17 SB
MEX:  217/265/239, 46 AB, 1 2B, 3 BB, 8 K, 2-3 SB

Godwin spent most of the season in the Atlantic League, hit very little, and got released.  He played in the Mexican League after that and again hit very little.

Godwin will be 32 before the 2015 season starts.  It’s likely the Pirates intend him to be mainly a coach, but he could spend some time as a backup outfielder in Altoona.
