Pirates Release Cody Ponce

According to their transactions page, the Pirates have released RHP Cody Ponce.  There’ve been indications that he might head to Japan, which would explain why he wasn’t designated for assignment, and why this move came when the Pirates didn’t need roster space.

Ponce came to the Pirates in 2019 from Milwaukee, in exchange for Jordan Lyles.  Between 2020 and 2021, he appeared in 20 games for the Pirates, including five starts.  He went 1-7 with a 5.86 ERA.  This past season was rough, as Ponce had a 7.04 ERA in the majors and 4.71 in AAA.
