The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed right-handed pitcher Enyel De Los Santos from the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday afternoon. The 25-year-old was designated for assignment yesterday.
De Los Santos has pitched parts of three seasons in the majors with the Phillies, with the majority of his time coming this year. He has a 6.75 ERA, a 5.23 FIP, and a 1.71 WHIP in 28 innings over 26 appearances. He’s walked 14 batters, but he’s picked up 42 strikeouts. He had a 2.70 ERA in 13.1 innings in Triple-A this year. Between all three seasons in the majors, he has a 6.21 ERA in 58 innings. De Los Santos has been a starter prior to this season, with his best results coming back in Triple-A in 2018, when he had a 2.63 ERA in 126.2 innings over 22 starts.
His scouting report says he has a fastball that touches 98 MPH, with an inconsistent breaking ball that sometimes shows above average, and a fringe-average changeup, to go along with spotty control of his pitches,which is why he profiles as more of a reliever now.
To make room on the 40-man roster, Steven Brault has been placed on the 60-day injured list, ending his season.
