Daily Pirates Discussion: New Prospect Rankings and a Salary Cap/Floor Structure Proposed by MLB

The old Pirates Game Discussion on No Quarter is now a Daily Pirates Discussion. We will update the article throughout the day with game notes, links to Pittsburgh Baseball Network stories, and any news for the day.

Today is an off-day. Pirates resume play on Friday with a series in St Louis against the Cardinals.

That said, there is plenty to discuss, led by MLB’s updated Pirates prospect rankings. There are also proposed changes to the Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations, which could help to establish a salary floor and ceiling.

In the article by Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich at The Athletic, MLB is reported to be discussing a luxury tax starting at $180 million, and a salary minimum of $100 million.

The players are unlikely to accept these numbers, especially since this would lower the luxury tax to a number lower than it’s been since 2013.

There are so many other factors to a deal. The article mentions the player’s union has already submitted an offer, which included more players going to arbitration after fewer than three years of service time. Ultimately, the players are unhappy with the current deal, which expires on December 1st.

I’ll have more on the impact this could have on the Pirates in tomorrow’s First Pitch. Feel free to add your thoughts on the CBA negotiations, the top prospects, or anything else in the comments below.

Will add when available.
