NEWS AND RUMORS

Follow along throughout the day as we provide updates and commentary on the daily Pirates news, along with links to stories around Pittsburgh Baseball Network.

The Pirates announced that Sam Howard will begin a rehab assignment in Indianapolis tonight. He last pitched on July 9th when he suffered a right oblique strain.

UPDATE 9:44 PM: I’m really looking forward to the Yoshi Tsutsugo experiment, which I’ll break down more in tonight’s First Pitch. The short version: His move to America has come during a COVID-shortened season, and he was barely given a look with either MLB team he was with this year. He’s now coming off his best run of hitting since leaving Japan. That came in Triple-A, but Ben Cherington seems to be playing the hot hand with Triple-A promotions. The Pirates are swapping out John Nogowski — whose hot hand has since cooled — and giving Tsutsugo a chance. I like Tsutsugo’s chances of being a .750-.800 OPS sleeper candidate. I’ll have more in First Pitch tonight. – Tim Williams
