Pirates Game Discussion: Pirates at Giants, 9:45 PM; Luis Oviedo Returns from Injured List

The Pittsburgh Pirates (36-60) are on the road for three games against the San Francisco Giants (60-35), starting tonight at 9:45 PM. Chad Kuhl will be on the mound for the Pirates, making his 13th start. He has a 4.31 ERA in 56.1 innings, with 45 strikeouts and a 1.37 WHIP. The Giants are countering with veteran right-handed pitcher Johnny Cueto, who will be making his 16th start. He has a 4.01 ERA in 83 innings, with 70 strikeouts and a 1.29 WHIP.

Prior to the game, the Pirates activated pitcher Luis Oviedo from the 10-day injured list. To make room on the active roster, Max Kranick was optioned to Indianapolis. Oviedo pitched four times while on his rehab assignment after suffering a Rule 5 roster crunch (officially called a left quad strain). He allowed eight runs over nine innings in those outings. He last pitched three days ago, throwing 2.1 innings in relief. Kranick has been in the majors three times this year, each time for one start. You can assume that he will be up again.
