Pirates Game Discussion: Pirates at Diamondbacks, 9:40 PM; Mears and Kranick Return to Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates (36-58) are on the road for three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks (28-68), with game two tonight at 9:40 PM. The Pirates will send out Tyler Anderson for his 18th start. He has a 4.35 ERA in 97.1 innings, with 80 strikeouts and a 1.19 WHIP. The Diamondbacks will counter with right-hander Taylor Widener, who will be making his seventh start. He has a 2.54 ERA in 28.1 innings, with 25 strikeouts and a 1.16 WHIP.

Prior to the game, the Pirates placed pitcher Chase De Jong on the injured list with left knee inflammation. They were also a man short yesterday due to the DFA of Kyle Crick. In place of those two players, Nick Mears and Max Kranick have joined the Pirates. This is the fourth trip to the majors for Mears and he has yet to make an appearance. This is Kranick’s third trip. Each of his previous two stints ended after one day, though he started games on each of those two days. He last pitched five days ago so he is available today if they intend to use him in relief. If not he is available to start tomorrow’s game, which does not have a starter listed yet.

Here are the lineups:

Yesterday’s Umpire Scorecard is a bad look for the Pirates, getting all of that help from the umpire in a loss to the worst team in baseball
