New Mock Draft/Same Name for Pirates from MLB Pipeline

MLB Pipeline posted a new mock draft on Wednesday, and for the third time in a row they have the Pittsburgh Pirates selecting high school shortstop Marcelo Mayer with the first overall pick in next month’s draft. The first day of the draft is July 11th.

Jonathan Mayo did the write-up here and he notes that the certainty of Mayer’s bat has him ahead of Jordan Lawlar right now, another high school shortstop who has been named as a possibility for the first overall pick even more times than Mayer. Mayo also notes that Louisville catcher Henry Davis is a “real possibility” for this pick. It appears to be a three-man race right now, with the Pirates leaning towards taking a bat over Vanderbilt pitchers Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker, two other players who have received first overall consideration this year.

The next five picks of the mock draft play out as follows:

  1. Mayer
  2. Davis
  3. Leiter
  4. Lawlar
  5. Brady House, high school shortstop
  6. Rocker
