The Pittsburgh Pirates (20-32) are on the road for a quick two-game series against the Kansas City Royals (25-26), starting tonight at 8:10 PM. Chad Kuhl will be on the mound for the Pirates, making his first start since April 18th. He pitched two rehab games with Indianapolis, while coming back from right shoulder discomfort. He gave up one run over 6.1 innings in those outings. The Royals are countering with veteran lefty Mike Minor, who will be making his 11th start. He has a 4.83 ERA in 54 innings, with 61 strikeouts and a 1.24 WHIP.
The Pirates sent down Nick Mears and signed a minor league catcher.

Yesterday’s Umpire Scorecard: Average performance here, I’ve seen much worse and much better, but how odd is it seeing the two worst calls on back-to-back pitches in the same plate appearance?
