The Pittsburgh Pirates added right-handed pitcher Chase De Jong to the active roster and he will get the start on Sunday afternoon against the Colorado Rockies. To make room on the 40-man and active roster, infielder Ildemaro Vargas was designated for assignment. The Pirates also announced that JT Brubaker has been placed on the bereavement list and Ka’ai Tom remains on the roster after being named as the 27th man for yesterday’s doubleheader.
De Jong has pitched parts of the last four seasons in the majors, posting a 7.12 ERA in 54.1 innings. He has a 3.60 ERA in four starts for Indianapolis this season, with a 1.20 WHIP and 28 strikeouts in 20 innings.
Vargas went 1-for-13 in seven games with the Pirates after being picked up off of waivers from the Chicago Cubs two weeks ago.
