Roansy Contreras Named Double-A Northeast League Pitcher of the Week

The start of the 2021 season keeps getting better for Pirates right-handed pitching prospect Roansy Contreras. After throwing 6.2 shutout innings last week, he was named the Double-A Northeast League Pitcher of the Week.

Contreras, acquired as one of four players from the Yankees in the Jameson Taillon trade, has now thrown 17.2 scoreless innings in three starts, with 28 strikeouts. He’s one of two qualified pitchers in the league who has yet to allow a run, and is tied for fourth in strikeouts in the league.

This type of start is what you like to see from a 21-year-old pitcher who is skipping over High-A. Contreras has been attacking hitters consistently in the zone, and getting these results, which is even more encouraging.

I have it on good authority that there will be more on Contreras coming soon to Baseball America, along with an interesting follow-up here.
