The Pittsburgh Pirates activated outfielder Gregory Polanco from the 10-day injured list and placed relief pitcher Kyle Crick on the injured list due to a right triceps strain. They also added lefty pitcher Chasen Shreve to the roster and designated infielder Hunter Owen for assignment.
Polanco was hitting .200/.289/.350 in 24 games prior to going on the injured list last week. Owen, who was on the taxi squad, was added to the roster in place of Polanco on May 4th and he went 0-for-4 in three games, reaching base once on a hit-by-pitch. Since Polanco’s IL trip was COVID related, he wasn’t required to miss the ten full days like a normal trip to the injured list.
Crick was pulled from his last appearance on Sunday when he allowed his first two runs of the season. He has a 1.59 ERA in 12 appearances this year. His IL trip was made retroactive one day, so it’s possible for him to return on the 20th if there’s nothing serious.
Shreve was signed as a minor league free agent this off-season. He had a 3.96 ERA in 25 innings over 17 appearances with the New York Mets last year, his seventh season in the majors. He made two scoreless appearances for Indianapolis last week.
