The Pirates keep making moves this morning. The team just announced that they’ve claimed outfielder Ben Gamel off waivers from Cleveland. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed Michael Feliz has been designated for assignment. The Pirates also recalled right-handed pitcher Geoff Hartlieb from Indianapolis.
Gamel was 1-for-14 this year with the Indians. In the previous four seasons, he has been around a .710-.735 OPS hitter, with speed and decent defense at the corners. The Pirates announced earlier that Bryan Reynolds was day-to-day, and they’ve been in need of outfielders with so many players banged up.
Feliz has decent numbers, but with a $1 M price tag and likely very little trade value as a middle reliever, he could have a chance at passing through waivers. Hartlieb has pitched two games in Indianapolis, and looked good during his time in Spring Training.
