MLB Pipeline posted a new mock draft yesterday and it brought about a new name for them for the first overall pick in the July amateur draft, which belongs to the Pittsburgh Pirates. We have seen Vanderbilt right-hander Jack Leiter’s name here a few times recently, but he’s had two shaky outings in a row, along with allowing eight homers over his last three starts. This new mock draft has the Pirates going for prep shortstop Jordan Lawlar.
Jim Callis wrote up the article and mentions that most teams believe that the Pirates will either go with Lawlar or fellow prep shortstop Marcelo Mayer with their pick. They also believe that Lawlar won’t be around for the third pick, even if the Pirates don’t take him. Along with Leiter and his college teammate Kumar Rocker, these four players have been rated as top five picks by almost everyone for the last few months. However, Callis also notes that Brady House (another prep shortstop) and Louisville catcher Henry Davis, have also made a push to have their name in contention.
We have posted video of Leiter and Rocker numerous times here. Mayer and House had video together in this link. We have posted Lawlar video as well, though not recently, so I’ve included a new one for him below, as well as one for Henry Davis, just in case he continues to make a push.
