On the Monday off-day, the Pittsburgh Pirates activated outfielder Ka’ai Tom from the 10-day injured list and optioned infielder Rodolfo Castro to the alternate training site. Tom was picked up off of waivers last Wednesday, but had to go through intake testing before being added to the active roster. Despite being placed on the 10-day IL, he was eligible to be activated as soon as he was cleared to play.
Castro came up on Wednesday when the Pirates designated outfielder Anthony Alford for assignment. Alford cleared waivers yesterday and was assigned to the alternate training camp. Castro played one game for the Pirates, starting at third base on Wednesday in the second game of the doubleheader. He went 0-for-3 and handled his only chance in the field.
The Pirates open up a two-game series against the Kansas City Royals at PNC Park on Tuesday night.
